Reliable peptide research begins with traceable concentration records. A clear laboratory record connects the material mass, solvent volume, resulting concentration, storage conditions, and experimental use. That chain of information makes it possible to reproduce an assay and compare data across runs.
Core concentration relationship
Concentration describes the amount of material present per unit of volume. For a dissolved research material, the basic relationship is:

Concentration = mass ÷ volume
For example, a record may express a stock solution in milligrams per milliliter (mg/mL), micrograms per milliliter (mcg/mL), or molarity. The right unit is the one used consistently in the study plan and laboratory notebook. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms.
Preparing dilution series
A dilution series allows a laboratory to examine a range of concentrations while preserving a documented relationship to the original stock. The standard relationship is:
C1V1 = C2V2
Here, C1 and V1 describe the starting concentration and volume, while C2 and V2 describe the intended concentration and final volume. Record both the calculation and the actual final volume. A second-person review of calculations is good laboratory practice whenever an experiment depends on a narrow concentration range.
Documentation that supports reproducibility
Each research preparation should be identifiable from the record alone. At minimum, document the material name and lot, mass used, solvent identity, final volume, resulting concentration, date, storage condition, and preparer. If an assay uses a working solution made from stock, record the relevant dilution relationship and label the working solution with a unique identifier.
Use validated laboratory volumetric equipment appropriate to the required precision, and follow the institution’s written procedures for handling, storage, and disposal. The manufacturer’s certificate of analysis and the laboratory’s approved protocol should remain linked to the preparation record.
Why the calculation is only one part of the method
A mathematically correct concentration can still yield unreliable data if the underlying material has degraded, the solvent is incompatible with the assay, or the sample has been exposed to unsuitable storage conditions. Check the study protocol, confirm material identity, and evaluate stability requirements before interpreting results.
