LIOTHYRONINE (T3)

Liothyronine is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). Liothyronine sodium binds to nuclear thyroid receptors. Consequently, liothyronine sodium induces gene expression necessary for growth and development. Liothyronine sodium is more potent than thyroxine (T4).

According to research, liquid liothyronine sodium may be critical in developing and regulating multiple metabolic processes responsible for homeostasis in animals.

WHAT IS LIOTHYRONINE?

Liothyronine is a synthetic version of the T3 thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones have necessary functions like controlling metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and more.

T3 INDICATION FOR USE

In general terms, exogenous liothyronine has shown great potential in replacing insufficient hormonal production and restoring T3 plasma levels in research animals. Other potential uses of liothyronine include:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Thyroid cancer (with radiation and surgery)
  • Thyroid suppression test

STRUCTURE OF LIOTHYRONINE

Molecular Formula: C15H12I3NO4

Molecular weight: 650.97g/mol

CAS number: 15785-49-6

IUPAC name: (2S)-2-amino-3-[4-(4-hydroxy-3-iodophenoxy)-3,5-diiodophenyl]propanoic acid

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Liothyronine is the most potent form of thyroid hormone. As a salt of triiodothyronine (T3), it is chemically similar and pharmacologically equivalent to T3. As such, it acts on the body to increase the basal metabolic rate, affect protein synthesis and increase the body’s sensitivity to catecholamines such as adrenaline.

Liothyronine may also enhance the generation of new neurons in the central nervous system.

Liothyronine has a faster onset of action and a shorter biological half-life than levothyroxine (T4).

LIOTHYRONINE EFFECTS

Based on the studies conducted on animals, liothyronine may play a role in treating the following:

  • Symptoms of obesity
  • Fibromyalgia, fatigue, and depressive symptoms
  • An underactive thyroid, a condition which is also known as hypothyroidism
  • Thyroid cancer and goiter
  • Infertility due to low thyroid hormone levels
  • Myxedema coma

LIOTHYRONINE SIDE EFFECTS

The side effects of Liothyronine seen in animal test subjects include:

  • Shakiness
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Hair loss
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Weight loss
  • Weak muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Increased appetite
  • Trouble breathing
